Depart Kathmandu
The early stages of this expedition involve sightseeing and experiencing the traditional Chinese culture in Beijing, and then boarding our train on the world’s highest railway. the Qinghai-Tibet railway. As this train does climb to high altitude it has been equipped with supplementary oxygen equipment.
We then commence exploring the Buddhist temples and palaces, markets and scenic spots around the ancient forbidden city of Lhasa. On the last day the many stairs of Potala Palace make for a good acclimatisation trek!
When our bodies have adjusted we depart Lhasa, heading for Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet with a population of 80,000 and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama.
The next day we continue to Shegar where we spend 2 nights. Here we have our first views of Everest, Cho Oyu and Makalu from the ground. Our vehicles provide a comfortable journey along the rough and bumpy Friendship Highway that links Kathmandu and Lhasa.
We take three days to travel to Base Camp to allow our bodies to adjust to the ever-increasing altitude. On arrival at Base Camp, you will have three nights staying in single tents in camp - enough time to get a taste of what life will be like for the team over the coming weeks. The option is available to stay for extra nights in BC, should you wish. Please ask ask us regarding the costs and organisation of this.
You then drive to Kathmandu via Zhangmu. You will have a full spare day ahead of you before heading for home to explore the many and varied sights of Kathmandu.

Leadership
Duncan Chessell, Director of Chessell Adventures, is the expedition leader and climbing guide for this expedition. Duncan’s vast mountaineering experience and Nepalese Sherpa friends will be a fantastic asset to the trip. Duncan is a qualified climbing guide (NZMGA) and has led and participated in over 100 expeditions worldwide. He has led successful expeditions to all of the seven summits (most of them twice). In 2007 he led the most successful Australian Everest Expedition ever, placing 15 of 19 climbers on the summit, his second ascent of Mt Everest. His role is to ensure every aspect of the expedition runs smoothly, safely and successfully. He and his Sherpa staff will handle all the ground logistics in Nepal from arrival in Kathmandu airport until you are safely back on the plane home.

Team work
An important part of any expedition is the teamwork of the climbers, guides and sherpas. At Chessell Adventures we have been successful in pulling it all together and keeping the team dynamics moving upward! Our awesome sherpa team has been working with us for years with some of our staff starting with us in 1995.
Some of the Chessell Adventures sherpa team on Mera in December 2007, all have summited Everest at least once if not 5 times!
